Going from self-employed to business owner

There’s a huge shift in mindset that takes place when you finally make the decision to go from self-employed to business owner.

Understanding your strengths and knowing how to harness them will be one of the major factors in your success as an entrepreneur.

But perhaps more importantly, knowing when to let go of outdated beliefs, approaches, and behaviors that no longer serve you can be huge in determining your success.

So what are these key mindset shifts that every aspiring business owner needs to make on their journey?

Develop a strategy

When first starting a business, It’s common to take more chances, make risky decisions, and learn as you go. There does come a point however where you need to take a more strategic approach if you wish to see sustainable growth.

This becomes even more crucial as you hire a team who will certainly require a more structured and streamlined approach.

So how do you develop a strategy? sit down, figure out your numbers, write out your business plan and where you expect to be in the next 6 months to a year..then execute!

Feel free to get your team involved as well as their success is crucial to yours and your business. They can help you define your strategy which will allow it to become more of an actionable plan.

Start with setting small goals and then move on to big goals. Make sure to define these goals clearly to your employees as well as it will help them stay motivated and aware of where they are providing value.

Let go of the need to be in control

Sure, when you first start your business, you will likely want to have control over everything. From marketing to finance and sales, you will probably be doing it all.
However, if you wish to grow, you will at some point–preferably sooner than later–delegate these task to someone else or hire a team.

It can be difficult to do at first. This business is your “baby” after all! It does get easier as you begin to hire a skilled and reputable team that you can trust.

Changing your mindset from do-er to dele-gator is a crucial turning point in your business and can truly affect your success. Consider which areas you absolutely HATE dealing with, OR, things that you just aren’t very good at. Then, find people who are and hire them.

You can focus on the areas of your business that generate revenue and, are more of interest to you.

Stop working in and begin working on

Although most entrepreneurs work solely in their business especially in those early days, they will come to the point that they will have no choice but to work on their business as well.

Instead of focusing only on the day-to-day work, you need to begin to shift your mindset to focus more on long-term strategy. Are you finding ways to market your business to more of your target customers? Are you advertising effectively or does your marketing plan need some tweaking?

Begin by focusing at least 2-3 hours working on (or directing your leadership team to work on), your actual business.

So, has your time come to expand your business and go from self-employed to business owner? Is it time for you to implement some of these mindset shifts? only you can determine that!

Begin by making these changes and the rest will naturally follow.
